Our Most Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why do digital users need computer glasses?
A: It is not uncommon for people to work (and play) on a digital screen for extended periods of time. Many digital users often end up with blurred vision, eye strain, and headaches — symptoms of Digital Eye Strain and Computer Vision Syndrome. Some compensate for their blurred vision by leaning forward, or by tipping their head to look through the bottom portion of their glasses. Both actions can result in a sore neck, sore shoulders and a sore back. GUNNAR computer eyewear is engineered to reduce digital eye strain while increasing contrast, comfort, and focus.
Q: Who should wear GUNNARS?
A: Anyone who spends time using computers or electronic digital devices will benefit from wearing GUNNAR glasses.
Q: What benefits can you expect from wearing GUNNARS?
A: GUNNAR Benefits:
1) Reduced eye strain, dry eyes, and computer related headaches
2) Decreased glare and screen reflections
3) Increased contrast and resolution
4) Improved productivity and performance
Q: Why are GUNNARS better than other computer glasses?
A: GUNNAR is the industry leader in advanced computer and gaming eyewear, being the only company with approved patents for particular computer glasses elements. Our patented lens technology and style-based design distinguishes GUNNAR eyewear from other options available. All GUNNARS, regardless of the style or price, reduce digital eye strain while improving contrast, comfort and focus. The price varies according to the design, frame materials, and the style.
Q: Why are GUNNARS better than other visual ergonomic options like screen savers or software solutions?
A: If you’re under 40, eye strain or blurred vision during computer work may be due to an inability of your eyes to remain accurately focused on your screen or because your eyes have trouble changing focus from your keyboard to your screen and back again for prolonged periods. Computer glasses differ from regular eyeglasses or reading glasses in several ways: 1) Most young people wear eyeglasses to correct their distance vision, and 2) Reading glasses are prescribed to correct near vision only. Only computer glasses are optimized for digital screens that are positioned 20 to 26 inches from the user’s eyes.

Q: What kind of cleaner can I use if I don’t have the GUNNAR Cleaning Kit?
A: Use light soap, water, and air dry. Make sure you don’t use any alcohol based substance which can damage the anti-reflective coatings!
Q: Are GUNNARS polarized?
A: Our lenses are not polarized as they can adversely affect viewing digital screens and even disappear at certain orientations. Although they are not polarized, our lenses do block damaging UV, high energy (HEV) visible, blue light and glare.
Q: Do these second as sunglasses?
A: Our Amber and Crystalline lenses have UV400 protection, but are designed for indoor digital viewing. For outdoor protection, please visit: Outdoor Eyewear
Q: Is there a line specifically for gamers, women and children?
A: Advanced Gaming Eyewear is designed specifically for gamers by incorporating increased viewing angles and headset compatible temples. In addition, we carry a variety of styles geared towards women. Our smaller frames designed for a narrow face can also fit teenagers.
Q: I am a designer; will the amber tint mess with my colors?
A: The amber tint in our glasses is designed to filter out harsh blue light, and as a result affects the color spectrum in a very subtle way. If designing in true color is important to you without a color shift, then Crystalline lenses are the best option for you.
Q: Do the crystalline glasses have a magenta hue?
A: If you notice any magenta hue, it will be extremely faint. We use an Anti-Reflective (AR) coating to help get more light get through the lens so the view is brighter and crisper. Typically we can get anywhere from 3-5% more light into the lens with the use of an AR coating. The catch is this….you have to tune the AR coating and choose a center for the peak reflectance over a certain part of the spectrum. Our normal AMBER tint has the peak reflectance at 450nm which corresponds to the big spike of energy coming off screens in the blue part of the spectrum. That helps eye fatigue due to over exposure to HEV (High Energy Visible) light.
For the Crystalline lens, we use an AR that reflects closer to 550nm (green). Hence, you’ll see a very slight green reflectance on the lens (less than 1% reflectance). We chose the 550nm peak reflectance to counter some of the natural filtering that happens due to our lens material. The two cancel each other out almost completely in most lighting conditions. However there can be natural imbalances in some lighting conditions where the amount reflected is greater than the amount filtered. In that case, you’ll get more green light left over and you’ll see a very slight hue of the color on the opposite side of the color wheel….magenta. Have the user work on getting a naturally lit environment that approximate white light. The other place where you can see some imbalance is in the prescription Rx. Thicker lenses will filter more, thinner lenses filter less. Again, the difference should be very slight…probably less variation than you’ll see as your monitor changes its calibration with changes in humidity, temp, age etc.
